Felt very nice to be able to cast a little this weekend and to try a longbelly line on the 14.9 LXi rod. Pretty impressed by the versatility of the rod and it did handle the longbelly very well. Could use a 10/11 to get a little more power but its nicer to feel the rod bend a long way and really work.

Tankar!
Vintern är nära och det är mycket som pågår just nu. Förberedelser inför nästa års THCI test är en konstant händelse och man försöker få så många vinklar på samma sak så man bräddar sitt kunnande och framför allt är det träning och åter träning som gäller samt hålla i så många kurser det går för att förbättra sitt sätt att lära ut till andra. Nya intressanta idéer kläcks och kommande år kommer bli väldigt intressant ur många perspektiv. Samarbetet med Guideline ser jag mycket fram emot och spännande att se vart det leder i långa loppet. Så hoppas eran vinter inte blir allt för hård mot er och att ni tar vara på stunderna som finns framför böcker och filmer av alla de olika slag.

The NEW Power Taper RM float
The NEW Power Taper RM float tested today!
I got to say that Rune Marthinsen has done a fantastic job on this one.
It is a 16m floating line that is very steady in air and unrolls extremely even thru it's entire length with no hinges so it feels like it floats thru the air. Yes it is very smooth! It handles easy to so no problem for the not so advance caster to take the leap to longer lines/heads.
It is a head so it can be cut to desired length and weight and it comes in four different weight classes, 40, 45, 50 and 55 grams so no need to cut if not necessary.

De prickiga
Vädret gör sig påmint om att förändringens tid är i sitt antågande och snart börjar en intressant och spännande tid då jakten på de prickiga (öringarna) inleds på allvar. Hoppas denna höst är mer givmild fångst mässigt än förra då öringarna bara rullade av en efter en.

Grunder i spey kastning
Principles of the SpeyCast
Here are some of the basic principles of speycasting, understanding and following these principles will make for a good foundation upon which to learn.

- A Stance that places your body square to the target.
- Line Tension in order to make Speycasting as effiecient as possible we want the line to be under tension at all times. In other words no slack line at any point. This is particularly true at the start of the cast. The line should be on the dangle and straight with the rod pointing down the line with the tip close to the waters surface ( strip back a foot of line prior to each cast before the initial lift to insure maximum tension) This insures that as soon as the rod starts to move/lift it will bend/flex/load this means that the rod is starting to work instantly and the end of the fly line starts moving.
e.g if the intial lift when forming a cast starts at the waters surface straight up to 10 o’clock and there is slack in the line, then the rod may not start to bend/flex/load untiil the rod passes 9 o’clock, hence the line will not have started moving till the same point and you will not have cleared enough line of the water’s surface and your anchor point will finish in the wrong place breaking at least one of the basic principles.
The point of this is that every stage of a spey cast depends on the previous stage, so any mistake incurred will have a knock on effect, making it impossible to cast efficiently and correctly. So, get the basics right !!!
- 180 degree principle – The D-Loop/back cast must be directly opposite the intended direction of the forward cast i.e 180 degrees.
- D-Loop the D-loop is created by placing the working line behind the caster/rod. This forms a “D” shape incorporating the rod at the Key position the line and the Anchor. This is what allows us to load the rod when executing the forward cast.
- Anchor this is the point where the end of the flyline and leader are in contact with the water creating tension and allowing the rod to be loaded. The Anchor should always be pointiing at the target – direction in which we wish are forward cast to go. If the Anchor is pointing at the target then we know are D-Loop is also lined up correctly. i.e The 180 Degree principle back cast directly opposite the intended forward cast.
We also want the anchor to be straight with a minimum of line stick.

Grundprinciper gällande all flugkastning!
Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF) master instructor Bill Gammel identified five essential elements for performing an effective cast.
The following should be learned and experimented with in order to understand the effects of ‘Bill’s Five’ on your everyday casting. These five essentials have become widely recognised as one of the most valuable instructional tools and form the basis of the FFF fly-casting curriculum.
Write them down, post them on your refrigerator and memorise them! Implementing Bill’s Five into your fly-casting practice will greatly advance your development as a fly caster.
1. Straight-line path of the rod tip (SLP)
Tight loops require the rod tip to track a straight-line path throughout the casting stroke. A convex (circular) tip path will result in a wide, open loop, whereas a concave (dipping) tip path will result in a tailing loop, where the line crosses itself, resulting in a wind knot. Your rod tip should not only travel in a straight line on the horizontal plane, but also the vertical (when looking down from the bird’s-eye view) in a 180-degree straight line directly away from, and back to, your target, to ensure accuracy and correct loading of the fly rod. This is what is known as the ‘180-degree rule’ and is essential for tight, accurate loops. Remember, the line will always follow the path of the rod tip!
2. Correct casting arc for the amount of line used
A variable casting arc is the number-one tool in the fly-caster’s arsenal. For short casts you should aim to employ a narrow casting arc/stroke, widening the arc as the line lengthens. The casting arc is the angle at which the rod butt rotates throughout the casting stroke. Stroke length is the lateral distance the hand moves during the cast from front to rear stopping points.
You must match your casting arc to the flex in your rod. Too wide a casting arc and you will open up the loop (convex tip path, see above); too narrow an arc and your loop will tail. The more line you have outside your rod tip, the more weight you have and the deeper the bend in your rod. Consequently, you must widen your casting arc to accommodate this and maintain SLP. Go out and experiment and you will soon see the effects of an incorrect arc.
Here’s an exercise: with a set amount of line, say 10 metres, false-cast slowly at first with a narrow casting arc – minimal power, casting smoothly. Look at the nice narrow loops rolling off your rod tip.
Now, widen your casting arc, waving the rod tip back and forth, and watch these loops open up into big, circular formations.
Now return to the tight loops of before. This time, stop your cast very short, effectively closing your casting arc, and watch your loop’s tail.
Congratulations, you have just learnt the fundamentals of loop control!
3. Correct power application
A smooth acceleration is required to effectively load your rod. The rod tip should be moving fastest at the end of your stroke when rotation (the crisp flick of the wrist) occurs. Too much unsustained power applied too early in the cast will force a deeper bend in the rod, thus dipping the rod tip below the straight line path… and there they are – tailing loops!
The most important word here is ‘smooth’ – so let’s look at the word itself, but spelt ‘sssmooth’. Soft and gentle to begin with, ending in an abrupt crescendo. Say it aloud, intensifying the pronunciation and volume throughout the word: “sssmooth”.
Let’s apply this to our casting stroke. ‘Sss’ gets the rod tip moving, pulling the line with it. Nice and smooth. Now, as we reach the harsher consonants and vowels ‘mooth’ we turn the rod tip over via rotation of the wrist. The rod tip flexes deeper against the weight of the line and accelerates as it unloads, sending our loop towards our target.
It is easy, in windy conditions particularly, to subconsciously attempt to cast harder. Problem is, all the extra energy put into this cast is often applied at the wrong time. You punch into the stroke, your rod tip buckles, and voila – tailing loops!
Let’s ease off a little. Tilt your casting plane forward, and by following the ‘sssmooth’ technique, you will continue to cast efficiently, applying power in the correct manner. You will be surprised at the distance you can now achieve, even against the conditions.
Think smooth when casting to ensure your rod tip’s straight-line path.
4. Correct timing of the stroke
There must be a pause between your back cast and forward cast to allow your loop to straighten. Your stroke should commence fractionally before the line completely straightens and tension is lost throughout the cast. Beginning your stroke too soon, or ‘anticipating’ the cast, is known as creep, and this effectively closes your casting arc. Waiting too long on the back-cast results in the line dropping below the rod tip, requiring much of the rod’s stored energy just to elevate it again to perform the forward cast. By then, very little energy is left in the rod to execute an effective presentation. If you flick this low back-cast forward, the result is either a wide, ineffective loop or a pile of line dumped at your feet.
Useful instruction: short line equals short pause. Long line equals long pause. Match the length of your pause to the length of line outside the rod tip.
5. Elimination of slack line throughout the cast
Any slack line that works itself into your casting cycle will have an adverse affect on your loop performance. You should begin your standard overhead cast with the rod tip down at the water and pull any slack line in through the guides. Everything is tight. Now, as you slowly lift/accelerate into your back-cast, the line remains tight, loading the rod effectively from the beginning. A smooth (sssmooth) application of power ensures your rod tip travels an uninterrupted SLP, and a crisp stopping of the rod at the completion of both the back and forward cast creates a solid anchoring for the flexed (loaded) rod to unload against.
Just as important is ensuring the correct timing and sizing of your haul to keep slack line from feeding into the cast. The key: short cast, short haul; long cast, long haul.

Jockfall&Tävling
Snart styr kosan mot Jockfall närmare bestämt natten mot fredag så bilar vi upp. Får fin fina rapporter om massor med lax i farten och vattnet nu lätt stigande. Bådar gott detta :-)
Blir även tävling i Piteå Open med på söndagen så detta blir några riktigt trevliga dagar.

Bra Jobbat!
Måste tacka Fred idag för stort visat intresse och hårt jobbande genom hela kursen. Viss frustration men det hör till då mans ska lära sig något nytt men det är bara att bita ihop och komma igen och så gjordes.

Morgon kaffe!
Laddar lite inför dagens kurs i switch/tvåhands kastning. Blir basic i början men ack så viktigt och sedan bygger vi vidare till mer avancerade saker som kast som naturligt följer kroppens rörelser och hur man använder dessa på bästa sätt.

Så dags för en ny privatkurs och denna gång på lördag. Ska bli roligt att kasta Switch denna gång men som sagt det är grunden i alla spey kast som gör det hela i långa loppet oavsett spölängden och det är där vi lägger fokus denna gång.

Kurs igen
Kurs i Älvkarleby idag och måste ge mina adepter en stor eloge. Vädret var milt uttryckt ruskigt blåsigt och till trots så kämpade de hårt. Kalle hade faktiskt en lax på men den fastnade inte riktigt och en annan var uppe efter hans fluga. Inte illa för att vara jungfrutur till älven :)

Tävling
Efter en katastrof dålig insats så var frustrationen enorm efter tävlingen och går genast och kastar utanför kastbanan och pang säger det så sitter kasten och det flyger långt....FAN! Så med andra ord kasten finns men de behövs läggas på kastbanan men det är rätt speciellt att kasta på bana. Får dock positiv uppmuntran att tävla vidare av bla Siikavaara (Landslagstränare) så nu siktar vi på Piteå Open 15/6 och revansch.

Kvällens träning!
Kvällens träning gick rätt bra i ett strålande väder och kavlungt på sjön, men det finns saker att slipa på men som sagt ingen blir fulländad i ett nafs.
Som sagt träning, träning och åter träning är det som gäller. Kortare pass med bra fokus ofta då ska detta bli riktigt bra till slut :)

Tävling
Snart dags för Ryd Open närmare bestämt nu på söndag den 25/5. Ska bli riktigt roligt att få tävla i grenen 15.1 Spey och se hur man själv ligger till och hur konkurrensen ser ut samt sätta LTS på tävlingsbanan igen.
Träningen har det varit lite si och så med och det har strulat lite med tekniken men började hitta tillbaka under förra träningspasset. Problemet har nog legat i att jag försökt ändra lite i tekniken men det har nog hjälpt till att det strulat mer än vanligt och jag har gått tillbaka till den som funkat för mig igen. Men med den gamla tekniken gäller grym timing och rätt kraft vid rätt tillfälle då funkar den långt över förväntan. Så påt igen bara så kommer längderna igen :)

Testning
Dagen till ära så får jag väga in en TSD competition klump till mitt LTS 15' comp spö. Ser fram emot morgondagens testning för snart så är det dags för tävling i Ryd. Närmare bestämt 25 Maj är det dags och ska bli riktigt roligt att få möta Sverige eliten inom speycasting och andra likasinnade galningar ;)

God morgon!
Trots väder (snö) idag i Uppsala så styr kosan mot Stockholm och jag kommer att finnas hos Stockholmsflugfiskecenter och deras Flugfiskedagen som arrangeras i Nedre Rudasjön. Många representanter och profiler från branschen finns på plats och självklart LTS med. Så kom gärna förbi och snacka lite och testa ett och annat spö.

Mike in action!
Mike in action med skagit riggen då vi hade kurs i Älvkarleby 29/4.
Han lyckades få några små men tappade en stor på Fla som slet av tafsen :(
Men han fick känna på en av de större i alla fall och var rätt tagen ;)
Så nästa gång är det scandi som gäller och slutet av maj så vem om det stora silvret kliver på...
